Travel Coach Guidelines
The Watertown Youth Soccer League travel teams play in the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) League.Games are played for 10 consecutive weeks in spring and fall.Spring season starts on the first or second weekend in April and runs to the 2nd weekend in June. Fall season starts on the Saturday after Labor Day and runs to the 2nd weekend in November.Your resource for BAYS rules and procedures, opponents, section captains, division directors, schedules and maps can be found atwww.bays.org.
Before the Season Starts
Once the players are notified of their team, each coach and assistant will receive an email with the contact info and emergency information for each player. Please contact your team to start planning for the upcoming season and remember to print and bring a copy of the emergency information to each practice and game. You will receive an updated emergency list along with your BAYS Roster just before the season starts.
Each coach and assistant coach must have a USYSA Coach ID Card with a current fall/spring year sticker. There must be at least one responsible adult at each game with a card or the game can not be played.If you coached in BAYS in the fall your card does NOT needs a new sticker for spring. Stickers will be distributed at the Fall & Spring coaches meetings.
Player pass cards are only required for all U12 division 1 & 2, U14 division 1 & 2 and U16/18 division 1 & 2 & 3 teams in the Spring season only. These teams (except U16 div 3 team –which needs pass cards but no birth certificates) are MTOC (Mass. Tournament of Champions) eligible and must have a set of pass cards for their team that will be checked by the referee at each game.
All head and assistant coaches must have filled out a CORI form online with Mass.Youth Soccer Association within the last 3 years in order to coach. If you did it previously, you are all set. If you are not sure, please contact us.
All coaches are strongly encouraged to attend the Mass. Youth Soccer Association license training courses. These are extremely valuable and are strongly recommended for all coaches. The entry level G course is available online. The F and E courses are offered in many neighboring towns.To check the description and schedule of courses and to sign up visit www.mayouthsoccer.org. Watertown Youth Soccer may be able to reimburse you for some or all of your coaching license costs. Please contact us.
All coaches will receive a pair of goalie gloves, a goalie shirt, 2 game balls and ice packs prior to the start of the season. If you need any additional equipment (disks, cones, pinnies, goalie shirt, ball bag) please email the equipment coordinator.4th, 5th and 6th grade teams use a size 4 soccer ball.7th – 12th grade teams use a size 5 soccer ball.
All players are required to wear the appropriate uniforms. This includes a jersey with a number, black shorts and red sox. Players are required to wear the WYSL official uniform.
Scheduling your practice
It is recommended that you hold 1 - 2 practices a week. Practice fields cannot be reserved. Practice fields and times are assigned by the field coordinator.
During the Season
BAYS roster: Coaches will receive an emailed version of the official bays roster before the start of the season, you need to print out, sign and bring 2 copies for each game..
The decision to close fields and cancel regularly scheduled weekend games will be posted on our website.
If you make a decision to cancel your game, you MUST NOTIFY THE REFEREE COORDINATOR.
Rescheduling Games and Canceling Referees
Call the other coach and agree on two or three possible times for the make-up game.
Email the Referee Coordinator and tell him the game ID, teams playing and a couple of times and dates for requested game. He will confirm field/date and times and assign a referee. Please allow at least a few days for confirmation of referee assignment.
Then call the other coach to confirm.
Color conflict: If you are playing another RED team AT HOME, you are required to have a set of scrimmage vests.
Tournaments and Patches: Coaches are encouraged to participate in tournaments. Watertown Youth Soccer may be willing to subsidize a portion of the tournament fee, please contact us.
